Alan Cary was born into a family of professional musicians and began studying piano with his father and violin with his mother at the age of five. He studied piano for twelve years with Dr. Paul Hanson, followed by two years with Dr. Maria Yefimova. He began his undergraduate studies in piano performance and pedagogy at Shenandoah Conservatory under Dr. John O’Conor and recently transferred as a junior to Western Michigan University, where he now studies with Dr. Yu-Lien The.
While at Shenandoah, Cary won the school’s concerto competition as a sophomore and performed the first movement of Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor with orchestra. He also presented full freshman and sophomore recitals featuring works by Liszt, Chopin, and Webern.
Cary has attended several prestigious summer festivals, including the Eastern Music Festival, Sewanee Summer Music Festival, and the Brevard Music Center. He has worked with renowned faculty such as William Wolfram, Amy Cheng, Steve Beck, Jihea Hong Park, Terrence Wilson, and Norman Krieger. He has also performed in masterclasses for Kenny Broberg, Alvin Chow and Angela Cheng, and Wu Han.
At the 2022 Sewanee Summer Music Festival, Cary performed a solo recital featuring Debussy’s Danseuses de Delphes and Chopin’s Nocturne in C minor, Op. 48 No. 1, in addition to numerous chamber works.
