Jonah Weller is an active bass trombonist and music educator in the Detroit-metro area. Jonah holds a Bachelor’s degree in music education from Michigan State University and a Master’s degree in trombone performance from Carnegie Mellon University. Jonah’s primary teachers include Ava Ordman (Michigan State University), Dr. Kevin Sedatole (Michigan State University), Jeff Dee (Carnegie Mellon/Pittsburgh Symphony), and Pete Sullivan (Carnegie Mellon/Pittsburgh Symphony).
During Jonah’s time at Michigan State, he participated in many of their prestigious ensembles, including the Spartan Marching Band, Symphony Orchestra, and Wind Symphony. Jonah can be heard on the Wind Symphony’s recording of King Mangoberry, which was nominated as Latin Grammy Classical album of the year. Jonah’s performance opportunities at Carnegie Mellon included performing as a member of the Carnegie Mellon Concert Band and was featured in the Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Mahler’s 5th Symphony.
Jonah has enjoyed performance success outside of school and has been selected to perform in many festivals including the Round Top Festival Orchestra, Third Coast Trombone Retreat, and the Fresno Opera and Orchestra Summer Academy. Jonah now regularly performs with many professional ensembles across Michigan including the Five Lakes Silver Band, Saginaw Eddy Concert Band, Lansing Symphony Orchestra, and the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to performing, Jonah has sustained an active private lesson studio over the past nine years. His students continue to obtain success, receiving consistent superior ratings at district and state solo and ensemble as well as being nominated for selected high school groups such as the Michigan Youth Arts Festival, Michigan Honors Bands, and Michigan All-State Band. He also serves as a trombone and low brass clinician for several Michigan public schools including Oxford Community Schools, Grand Ledge High School, Troy Athens High School, and Troy High School.
Jonah resides in Troy with his wife Marissa (an orchestra teacher for the Oxford Community Schools), and their Shih-Tzu/Yorkie mix, Minnie.
