       “Imagine the starting five of the Boston Celtics were coming to Haslett just to play for you and share the secrets to their success with you.  Well, the Boston Brass is one of top professional music groups touring the world today and they are coming to Haslett to play just for you..” These are the words of Greg Lindsey, Haslett Middle School band director, as he impressed upon his students what a great opportunity they were about to enjoy.

     Marshall Music Company and Conn-Selmer brought the world renowned Boston Brass to Michigan for six clinics the week of January 12th as part of its continued support of music education throughout the state. Both companies continue to demonstrate their dedication to music education beyond the selling of instruments through their comprehensive school service offerings which include teacher in-service workshops, clinicians, and educational materials to enhance educators’ proficiency the student’s overall music education experience. 

     The members of the brass quintet spent the week working with middle school and high school students, offering   insight into how to become a better performer, practical practice tips, the role of each ensemble member in producing a unified sound, encouraging all students to take a chance on improvisation and offering a glimpse into the  life of a professional musician. The Boston Brass visited Alpena, Marlette, Haslett and Traverse City. Trumpeters Jeff Conner and Richard Kelley, French horn, JD Shaw, trombonist, Ed Clough and tuba player, Andrew Hitz put on entertaining as well as educational clinics for the students.

      The Boston Brass performs over 120 concerts annually, dazzling audiences at concerts and jazz festivals throughout the U.S. Committed to education as they are to  
performance, the quintet conducts master classes at colleges and universities around the country. Along with their instrument sponsor, C.G. Conn, Boston Brass also conduct clinics and concerts at regional and national music educational conferences across the country, most  recently at the Midwest International Music Conference this past December in Chicago. C.G. Conn, and Boston Brass have helped to raise over $100,000 for VH1’s “Behind the Music” program, providing musical instruments to schools in need.
