Band Blast-Off Recruiting DVD Features Dallas Brass’ Deanna Swoboda

“Band Blast Off” is a new and exciting band recruiting video on the market, featuring the former tubist for the Dallas Brass, Deanna Swoboda. The video is a fast paced MTV-like presentation emceed by Deanna and soloist/educator, Lance LaDuke and features interviews with middle school and high school band students. Deanna introduces students to the various elements of friendship, fun, and teamwork that a band program can provide.  In addition to the student interviews, she shows off all of the instruments in the band, and provides a music quiz for the pre-beginning band student.  The “Music Challenge Checkpoint” gives the student an opportunity to test their musical knowledge and ability with rhythm, higher/lower notes and melody.

Deanna, who began her music career as a clarinet player, is now Assistant Professor of Music at Western Michigan University where she teaches tuba and euphonium and performs with the Western Brass Quintet, a resident faculty ensemble. Swoboda holds degrees from the University of Idaho and Northwestern University, and is completing studies for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Arizona State University.

Since 2000, Swoboda has performed as a member of the Dallas Brass, a 6-piece ensemble which travels the United States and Europe presenting approximately 100 concerts per year and working extensively in the public schools and at colleges and universities. Other performing credits include the Denver Brass, Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Symphony, Symphony of the West Valley (California), and Washington/Idaho Symphony and founder of the University of Oklahoma’s International Tuba/Euphonium Summer Workshop, which has been held annually since 1998. She has appeared on CD recordings with the Dallas Brass, Salt River Brass Band, and Belle Aire Brass. Her solo CD, “Deanna’s Wonderland,” was released on Summit Records in 1999.

For the past 10 years, and now as an Accent Tuba Artist, Ms. Swoboda performs hundreds of motivational recruiting presentations and clinics called “Brass Rap!” in public schools around the country.  Ms. Swoboda was recently inspired to develop this program into a recruiting DVD for band which she wrote, produced, organized, and performed on the educational resource DVD “Band Blast-Off!” available from Focus on Excellence at www.focus-on-excellence.com.  This project is sponsored by Accent Musical Instruments www.accent.cc and the publishing company Focus on Excellence.

Marshall Music will partner with Deanna this year sponsoring recruiting assemblies and clinics across the state. Deanna will be available to visit your elementary schools to encourage students to be a part of the music program and to encourage those already in band or orchestra to continue. She is available to work with your low brass sections, also.

The response to Band Blast-Off has been exciting. Marshall Music received several copies of the DVD this past summer and has schools rushing to get their copy. It doesn’t end there!  Marshall Music and Deanna are working on creating a recruiting DVD for strings based on the “Band Blast-Off” model.

We invite you to meet Deanna Swoboda at the Accent Instrument booth at the Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids this January.
