Planning for a Successful First Year

Clinic helps prepare first year educators

 February, 2002

Marshall Music Company's two day seminar, Planning for a Successful First Year, was an overwhelming success. Marshall, in conjunction with The Selmer Company, sponsored the event on November 29th and 30th, 2001.

The seminar was designed to prepare the new music educator for the administrative aspects of being an instrumental music director. Topics included organization, parent and administrative relationships, first year challenges, motivation, retention, recruiting, and the business aspects of music education.

Even though the session was conceived for the student just out of student teaching, three first year band directors found the clinic to be valuable. “This was a wonderful experience! I can't begin to tell how much I needed this right now already having started my teaching career." was the response of a first year teacher.

Panelists representing two to thirty-two years teaching experience included orchestra director, Dorothy McDonald, East Lansing; and band directors, Jim Barry, Okemos;  Sandi Ahlers, Houghton Lake; Suzanne Miller, Carman-Ainsworth; and Jim Smith, Potterville.

The administrative and parent perspectives were presented by: Larry Jose, school board member and retired band director; Tom Kestenholtz, former band booster president and school board member; and Arnold Kummerow, superintendent of Armada Schools and a former band director.

In the evening the seminar moved to Elkhart, Indiana. Selmer hosted the participants at the Ramada Inn. During the final session after dinner, George Fetter, Director of School Service for Marshall, discussed recruiting methods.

On Friday, Selmer provided tours of the Bach and Main Street plants and additional clinics. Carolyn Manley presented the educational programs Selmer offers and  the Selmer University. Lance McCord, regional sales representative for Selmer, addressed the business of music education. The relationship between the music educator and music store and what they should expect from the industry were also addressed.

The relaxed format of the seminar created an enjoyable learning experience for the young educators. "It was a wonderful experience and I recommend it for everyone,” commented one of the participants.

The seminar was received with great enthusiasm. One participant wrote, “I felt this was an amazing seminar. I think that every up and coming music educator could benefit greatly from your presentation. I felt the whole field was presented and that is rarely done in such a fun and warming atmosphere.”

The seminar will be offered, again. May 5th and 6th, 2009
