Product Watch:  The Beginning Double Horn Dilemma, Solved

November, 2001

One of the great challenges faced in the beginning band is the French horn. You must contend with two challenges: using an instrument in a playable range and the need for a double horn at an entry level price.

Range difficulties exist when young students begin on the French horn pitched in F. The student is faced with either very low or high pitches when he is in a class with other instruments. The alternative is to start students on a Bflat horn, but these horns are not practical for later use. If a  student starts on a double horn and uses the Bflat side he must contend with holding the F/Bflat valve down with the thumb. This is fatiguing.

Second, the cost of a double horn, which the student will eventually need, is very expensive for a beginning student. Often, students continue on the single horn through high school.

Jupiter has come up with a great solution for these problems. The Carnegie double horn is priced approximately 10-20% more than most single horns and the F/Bflat valve can be set for the Bflat tubing without holding down the thumb valve. Using the Bflat side of the instrument puts the horns in a more comfortable range for beginners and allows them to fit easily into brass classes with cornet/trumpets.

The Carnegie double horn is a viable rental option for beginning horn students. Designed as an intermediate instrument, it fills the gap between student line horns and the top line Farkas and Yamaha models.

Today’s sophisticated music educator is looking for every possible advantage in teaching.  Although much advancement has been made in instrument design, relatively little has filtered down to the beginning band level.

Carnegie XL instruments, by Jupiter, fill that need.  By providing instruments with design advancements only found on far more advanced instruments, beginners start with instruments that will take them further.  As they progress, students will employ more features found on these instruments.

Designed to exceed the needs of student musicians, Carnegie instruments are standard with upgraded features such as rose brass bells, sterling silver trumpet leadpipes, adjustable clarinet thumb rest, flute gold lip plates, and nickel plated keys on all woodwinds.

Ask your Marshall Music representative about the Carnegie XL line. He will be happy to provide you with brochures or have you try these instruments for yourself.
