Acćent Instruments: designed from the director’s view May, 2002 Imagine that you as a band director could design the features you want in a student line instrument. What features would be included in instruments designed from the band director’s perspective? Obviously, quality would be a priority. Brasses would have nickel silver tubing at points of wear. Trumpets would include a first valve thumb slide hook as well as the third valve tuning ring, a double braced tuning slide, and tuning slide receivers would be rolled for reinforcement. Trombones would have chrome-plated inner slides. Clarinets would have undercut tone holes and an adjustable thumb rest. Saxophones would have a full rib construction for strength, detachable bell, an articulated C# key to facilitate fingering and high F#. Percussion kits would include 32-note extended range steel bells, tunable practice pad or ten lug snare drum with a heavy duty stand and padded nylon bag with wheels. And all the wind instruments would come with premium mouthpieces and the cases would be of rugged construction and easily repairable. Just as important as quality, directors seek value for their students and parents. Instruments with these features need to be priced in the same range as those without these valuable upgrade features. Finally, there needs to be an extended warranty to stand behind the instrument and cases. Well, you don’t have to imagine anymore. Marshall Music has heard directors’ concerns over the years and has joined with eleven other renowned school music dealers around the country to develop Acćent Instruments, an instrument line designed, in essence, by music directors.
